This study guide is not intended to be a complete reference manual for technical information. Its purpose is to guide the reader to study material for each of the major subject areas for each of the classes. There is no implied claim that this study guide covers every possible point on which an technician may be tested. However, it is intended to be comprehensive in its coverage of the essential information for each examination. Divided into eighteen chapters, each chapter in the study guide has basic and advanced information intended to help the individual prepare for the certification examination.

The certification exams use several texts as reference manuals for exam topics. Each chapter of the study guide contains references to specific chapters of these manuals for those who wish to access more information on the topics covered in that particular section.

The intent of this manual is to provide a document that elaborates on the subject matter listed in the State Certification Need-To-Know Criteria. The manual will serve a dual purpose in that the operator will have the necessary information needed to study for their State Certification tests as well as an on-hand reference manual that can be used to optimize their treatment processes.

This manual has been created as a tool to assist wastewater systems operators in New Mexico in preparation for taking the New Mexico Collection Systems Operator, Small Wastewater Systems Operator, and Wastewater Systems Operator certification exams. There are two classes of Collection Systems Operator certification, two classes of Small Wastewater Systems Operator certification, and four classes of Wastewater System Operator certification. The guide is intended to be a complete reference manual for technical information. Its purpose is to guide the reader to study material for each of the major subject areas for each of the classes. There is no implied claim that the study manual covers every possible point on which an operator may be tested. However, it is intended to be comprehensive in its coverage of the essential information for each exam.

The Wastewater Systems Operator Certification Study Manual was produced by the NMSU DACC WUTAP (New Mexico State University, Doña Ana Community College, Water Utilities Technical Assistance Program) and funded by the New Mexico Environment Department’s Surface Water Quality Bureau – Utility Operators Certification Program. Members of the WUTAP staff – Robert Gott, Program Coordinator; Robert George & Bernie Garcia, Field Training Specialists; and Nancy Gott, Office Manager – are solely responsible for the writing, editing, and compilation of this manual.

The NEW MEXICO WATER SAMPLING CERTIFICATION STUDY MANUAL has been created as a tool to assist those who collect water system samples in preparation for taking Water Sampling Technician certification exams. This book is not intended to be a complete reference manual for technical information. Its purpose is to guide the reader to study material for each of the major subject areas for Level 1 and Level 2 certification. There is no implied claim that this study guide covers every possible point on which a technician may be tested. However, it is intended to be comprehensive in its coverage of the essential information for each exam, based on standard Need-To-Know criteria.

This study guide is divided into seven chapters. Each chapter in the study guide has study questions and sample test questions that are intended help the individual focus on the type of information that is covered in an exam. The study questions are designed to direct the reader to exam information that is related to the chapter topics. No answer sheet is provided. You will have to look them up.

The Appendices contain helpful information regarding sampling schedules and the development of sample siting plans for the system.

The material dealing with sample collection has been referenced to approved EPA methodology for sample collection and preservation. Information regarding the completion of the various sample request forms has been referenced to the New Mexico Department of Health – Scientific Laboratory Division.

The NEW MEXICO WATER SYSTEMS OPERATOR CERTIFICATION STUDY MANUAL should be used as a tool to assist Water Systems operators in New Mexico in preparation for taking the New Mexico Distribution Systems Operator, Small Water Systems Operator, and Water Systems Operator certification exams. In New Mexico Water Certification is divided into the following areas:

This manual is divided into fifteen chapters. The manual also contains a useful appendix, US EPA’s manual “Response Protocol Toolbox: Planning for and Responding to Drinking Water Contamination Threats and Incidents”. Each chapter in the study manual has basic and advanced study questions and sample test questions that are intended help the individual determine the type of information that is covered in an exam. Basic questions will generally cover information in the Small Water Systems exams and the Class 1 and 2 for Water Systems and Distribution Systems exams. Advanced questions will cover information in the Water Systems Class 3 and 4 and Distribution Systems Class 3 exams.
