Fresh or Frozen Turkey?

There is not much difference between a fresh or frozen turkey, it is simply a matter of convenience or personal preference. Here are a few tips to help you decide which type of turkey to purchase:
  • Do not buy a turkey that does not have the USDA or state mark of inspection.
  • If you choose to buy a frozen turkey you may do so at any time. The shelf-life of a frozen turkey is indefinite; for best quality use within 1 year.
  • If you choose to purchase a fresh turkey, do so 1-2 days before cooking.
  • Never purchase a pre-stuffed fresh turkey
  • Do not thaw a frozen pre-stuffed turkey before cooking
  • Use the following chart to determine what size of turkey to buy

Whole bird 1 pound per person
Boneless breast of turkey 1/2 pound per person
Breast of turkey 3/4 pound per person
Pre-stuffed frozen turkey 1 1/4 pound per person - keep frozen until cooking
