The regulation established Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA (also known as GenX chemicals) as individual contaminants, and will regulate PFNA, PFHxS, HFPO-DA, and PFBS as a mixture through a Hazard Index. MCLs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.env.nm.gov\/pfas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2025\/03\/PFAS-Regulatory-Thresholds-March-2025.pdf\">enforceable maximum regulatory levels<\/a> of a compound allowed in drinking water. The rule is expected to reduce PFAS exposure in drinking water for millions of people, preventing thousands of deaths and significantly lowering the incidence of PFAS-related illnesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The rule requires:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Public water systems (PWSs) to monitor for these six PFAS. Systems have three years to complete initial monitoring (by 2027), followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.env.nm.gov\/pfas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2025\/02\/PFAS-Monitoring-Flow-Chart-NMED-June-2024.pdf\">ongoing compliance monitoring<\/a>. Water systems must also provide the public with information on the levels of these PFAS in their drinking water beginning in 2027.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.env.nm.gov\/pfas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2025\/02\/PFAS-Monitoring-Factsheet-rev-021225-1.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.env.nm.gov\/pfas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2025\/02\/PFAS-Monitoring-Factsheet-rev-021225-1.pdf\">Link to Monitoring Fact Sheet<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Public water systems have five years (by 2029) to implement solutions that reduce these PFAS if monitoring shows that drinking water levels exceed these MCLs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beginning in five years (2029), public water systems that have PFAS in drinking water that violate one or more of these MCLs must take action to reduce levels of these PFAS in their drinking water and must provide notification to the public of the violation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class='nmenv_accordion'><div class='nmenv_accordion_item level_0'><div class='nmenv_accordion_item_title'><i class='fas fa-chevron-right' aria-hidden='true'><\/i><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Emerging Contaminants in Small or Disadvantaged Communities Program<\/h2><\/div><div class='nmenv_accordion_item_body'>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The Emerging Contaminants in Small or Disadvantaged Communities Program (ECP), under the Water Protection Division, focuses on a statewide assessment of emerging contaminants and regulated PFAS in drinking and source water.
