What is the Wastewater Technical Advisory Committee (WTAC)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Wastewater Technical Advisory Committee (WTAC) established under NMSA 1978, Section 9-7A-15, evaluates wastewater technologies, and provides standardized objective evaluations of wastewater treatment and disposal technologies for both large-and small-flow domestic, commercial and agricultural wastewater systems. The Committee submits its findings to the cabinet secretary of the Environment Department for approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2003, the New Mexico State Legislature amended the Department of Environment Act to create the Wastewater Technical Advisory Committee (WTAC), that consists of five members appointed by the NMED secretary.  The WTAC serves to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cprovide standardized objective evaluation of wastewater treatment and disposal technologies for both large- and small-flow domestic, commercial and agricultural wastewater systems and submit its findings to the secretary for final approval by the secretary, who shall add the wastewater treatment and disposal technologies to the list of approved technologies maintained by the department\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The NMED secretary appointed the five WTAC members in June 2003, and the WTAC held its first meeting in September 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WTAC consists of five members appointed by the cabinet secretary of the Environment Department. The WTAC must include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. a wastewater treatment system engineer with at least 10 years of experience in wastewater system design and construction; <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. a faculty member from a university or college located within New Mexico with a minimum of a master’s degree in biological science, microbiology, soil science or engineering, and with a minimum of 10 years of work or academic experience with wastewater treatment or wastewater treatment facility management; <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. a representative from the New Mexico state university water utilities technical assistance program; <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. a class IV certified wastewater operator with at least 10 years of experience; and <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. a representative from the New Mexico Home Builders Association<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
