Dear Concerned Citizen:
Enclosed is the public notice from the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) announcing the availability of a revised draft Permit and a public hearing to consider public comment for issuance of a final Permit to the U.S. Department of Energy's and Westinghouse Waste Isolation Division's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), located 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The proposed draft Permit will authorize WIPP to store and dispose transuranic mixed waste.
All written public comment on the revised draft Permit must be received no later than 5:00 PM January 18, 1999. The public hearing will begin on February 22, 1999 in Santa Fe, will continue in Carlsbad on March 8, and will reconvene in Santa Fe on March 15, if necessary. Please refer to the public notice for procedures for submittal of written public comment and public participation at the public hearing.
NMED has also developed a fact sheet that sets forth the significant factual, legal, and policy questions considered in preparing the revised draft Permit.
