Section 1: General Questions

1. How much is the NMED Cannabis and Hemp Bureau permit fee for cannabis edibles?

A: After an application is approved, NMED-CHB will schedule an opening inspection.  When the opening inspection is successfully passed, a $200 initial permit fee is due immediately.

2. How long does it take to approve my application?

A: NMED-CHB will review and respond within 30 working days from the date of submitting your application.  Incomplete applications will require multiple rounds of review, which will cause the approval process to take longer.

3. Why do I need to get my NMED application approved before proceeding with a Cannabis Control Division (CCD) application?

A: CCD fees are non-refundable, and this process has been put in place by CCD to ensure applicants do not lose large sums of money due to not being able to meet the regulatory requirements of other agencies, such as NMED-CHB for edible production.

4. What does “edible” mean?

A: A cannabis edible is a type of food or drink that contains THC. Examples of cannabis edibles include: gummies, chocolates, pastries, lemonade, or other carbonated beverages. If you would like to know if the product you’re making is considered an edible email us.

5. Can I provide my edibles at special events or markets?

A: No. For further details, please contact RLD, Cannabis Control Division here for details about providing cannabis products at temporary events.

6. Why do I need a Food Handler Card for employees? Where do I find one?

  • Workers knowing and following food safety practices consistently is key to producing safe products.  The Food Handler Card training is a great tool for teaching employees and providing them with an understanding of why following food safety practices is important.  All employees who will handle cannabis edible products, at any time, must have a Food Handler Card. Click here for a list of approved programs offering this training.
