Public Outreach 2023-2024
In September 2023, NMED started its Ground and Surface Water Protection – Water Reuse rulemaking. Water Reuse Regulations will be a part of 20.6.2 NMAC, and will incorporate industrial, domestic and produced water reuse. The produced water rulemaking will be the first part of the water reuse rulemaking.
A tentative timeline has been established for the water reuse rulemaking for the produced water regulations. The timeline includes opportunities for the public to participate through the 30 day public comment period, the stakeholders outreach, and comments on the draft rule.

Summary of Initial Public Input on Produced Water (English)
In the fall of 2019, NMED hosted a series of public outreach meetings across the state to engage the public on the topic of treating produced water for use outside the oil and gas industry. NMED hosted the meetings along with representatives from the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) and the Office of the State Engineer (OSE) to provide stakeholders with information on produced water and NMED’s upcoming rulemaking process. The public engagement process provided opportunities for stakeholders to share input with state officials on the range of critical environmental, natural resource and human health considerations involved in the implementation of the Produced Water Act.
Meetings were held in October and November (2019) in Albuquerque (Oct 15), Santa Fe (Oct 30), Carlsbad (Nov 14), Farmington (Nov 19) and Las Cruces (Nov 25).

In 2019, El Departamento de Medio Ambiente de Nuevo México (NMED, por sus siglas en inglés) organizará una serie de reuniones de divulgación pública en todo el estado para envolver al público en el tema del tratamiento del agua producida para su uso fuera de la industria del petróleo y gas. NMED organizará las reuniones junto con representantes del Departamento de Energía, Minerales y Recursos Naturales (EMNRD, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Oficina del Ingeniero del Estado (OSE, por sus siglas en inglés) para proporcionar a las partes interesadas información sobre el agua producida y el próximo proceso de reglamentación de NMED. El proceso de participación pública proporcionará oportunidades para que las partes interesadas compartan comentarios con los funcionarios estatales sobre la gama de consideraciones críticas relativas al medio ambiente, los recursos naturales y la salud humana envueltos en la aplicación de la Ley de Agua Producida.
