The New Mexico Environment Department and New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department are each in the process of developing rules that will regulate methane emissions.
The departments were charged with this task under the Executive Order on Addressing Climate Change and Energy Waste Prevention of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. The order instructs NMED and EMNRD to “jointly develop a statewide, enforceable regulatory framework to secure reductions in oil and gas sector methane emissions and to prevent waste from new and existing sources and enact such rules as soon as practicable.”
