The New Mexico Environment Department monitored COVID-19in wastewater at congregate care settings in the state until October 2021. Symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals who are infected with COVID-19 shed the virus in their feces. This created an opportunity to monitor for the presence of the virus in sewage. This project provided valuable information to decision-makers that, along with a range of other data, helped inform public health actions that were used to help control the spread of COVID-19 during the peak of the pandemic.
